Our Plan for a Simple Christmas

I love Christmas! It's my favorite holiday. Unfortunately, it also seems to be the one that stresses me out the most. Over the last few years though we have worked at paring down the holiday to the things that bring us the most joy. The two things that have made the most impact are choosing to not run all over creation and focusing on traditions instead of material things.

Meal Plan: Oct. 23

Time to get back in the meal planning saddle.

When we don't meal plan we tend to lose vegetables and leftovers in the refrigerator, our meals are not as healthy as they could be, and we spend more since I end up having to run to the grocery store more often. I had been blaming a crazy summer, since summer always throws off our routine a bit, but it has been autumn for quite awhile now so I am out of excuses.

Three Lessons in Keeping a Ram

It's that time of year.

Love is in the air.

Well, if you're a sheep that is.

And if you plan on having lambs this winter or spring you are going to need a ram.

This will be our third breeding season here at the homestead and while this makes us far from experts we have learned a thing or two about keeping a ram on the property. We have mostly learned through making mistakes and I would love to share them with you so you don't have to learn the hard way like we did.

Thankful Thursday #1 : Our Garden

This is a new series I am starting. Life has been crazy with children, critters, and the three H's (homesteading, homemaking, and homeschooling.) Sometimes when things get crazy it is easy for me to feel overwhelmed instead of appreciating the moment. To change that I am going to post the things I am thankful for each week. I want to make sure I am enjoying the life God has given me rather than focusing on the negative.

Laundry Detergent Recipe

It is officially summer!

And that means lots and lots of laundry!

You would think less since we are wearing less layers but with sweat, dirt, and lots of time spent outside I feel like we are going through multiple outfits a day. Add to that cloth diapers, cloth napkins/rags and the piles are really stacking up. I normally manage with a load or two a day but this summer seems to be getting the best of me.

Simple Granola Recipe

Sometimes I just want an easy breakfast. A breakfast that doesn't involve cooking. Especially on the days that we need to be out the door by a certain time. With chores and two little kids, getting out the door on time is already difficult and cooking a hot breakfast just adds more chaos to those days.

Three Things to Keep in Mind When Housing Sheep & Goats Together {Guest Post}

Today we have a guest post by Liz Greene from Instant Lo.

For many homesteaders, sheep and goats are their first foray into the world of livestock. As with anything, it’s always cheaper and easier to kill two birds with one stone; therefore keeping sheep and goats together is a no brainer. Luckily, this is a fairly easy feat —  just as long as a few precautions are followed.

Dairy Sheep: Our Milking Routine

Getting started with dairy sheep has been quite the experience and we are finally reaping the rewards! Last weekend we fully weaned Sally's and Doughnut's lambs and I started milking twice a day. This is only our first year and we are far from experts but since there isn't a ton of information on milking sheep like there is with milking cows or goats I wanted to share our experiences with you. Here is what we did this year, our plan for next year, and our daily milking routine.

DIY Toothpaste

When we started pursuing a more natural lifestyle over six years ago our toothpaste was one of the first items to go. We didn't like what we were reading about fluoride nor did we like most of the other ingredients. At first we just switched to a fluoride-free natural brand but those are expensive and still contain some ingredients I was less than thrilled about. It was around this time that I started reading blogs and I found that some people were making their own toothpaste! What! I didn't know that was an option. So I started looking for a recipe.

Learning to Homestead

Not too long ago homesteading wasn't called homesteading, it was just called living. Cooking from scratch, animal husbandry, food preservation, gardening, ...... these were all just a part of everyday life.

Livestock Loss

Update: After meeting with a vet we are 99% sure this was tetanus. Sprinkles arrived to our farm after we normally vaccinate our sheep for it and she didn't receive her CDT shot. We try to keep records for all of our sheep and keep everyone up to date but she fell through the cracks. I feel awful knowing we probably could have prevented this but mistakes will always happen. All we can do is learn from them.

I love the path we have chosen. I love our animals, garden, and even the chores. And while everything is great most of the time there are some moments where I really question what we are doing here.

Last week was one of those moments.

Sprinkles' Lambing (Video)

Watching an animal (or human for that matter) be born is always a marvelous sight. It doesn't matter how many times you witness it, it is amazing every time. This is one of the reasons why spring is such an exciting time on the homestead.

Birth, babies, and fresh starts..... It just doesn't get any better!

Why Sheep?

When we purchased this property we knew we wanted to add on livestock in order to produce our own meat and dairy. I had always assumed we would end up with a dairy cow and raise it's calf each year for meat. However, after doing lots and lots of research I kept coming back to sheep.

Choosing to use cloth diapers is an easy choice. Figuring out how to keep them clean can be a bit more difficult. There are so many factors that can affect your washing routine: covers, inserts, style of washer, type of water, detergent....... the list goes on.
